The couple were introduced by a mutual friend on election night 2008, at a Democratic National Committee party. "It was a really fun night," Mr. Chanda said. "Here's a beautiful girl, and I'm having a drink and watching this historic event. Life is pretty good."
They exchanged e-mail addresses...went out about five times over the next few months, but Ms. Legg was reluctant to become seriously involved. She had just moved to NY after working for Yahoo in CA. "I was looking for a job and unsure of what I was doing next. I did not want to get swept up into a relationship without knowing what I was doing."
It would take another Obama event, an inaugural ball, to heighten the relationship. Mr. Chanda had four tickets to the ball and invited Ms. Legg along with two male friends. He said they could all stay at his home in DC. Ms. Legg declined, thinking that spending so much time with his friends, then all of them going back to his home, seemed "forward" so early in their relationship.
On the night of the ball, she had dinner with an old friend in NY and suddenly began wishing that she was with Mr. Chanda. She sent text messages all night, and he wrote right back. Finally, her friend asked, "Why aren't you dating him?" After thinking it over, Ms. Legg sent another text: "You know what? Maybe we should make this a little more serious?" His reply: "Absolutely!"
